Greenwave Flash Article
I realize this is old news, but a lot of people are still talking about it. It made national headlines when Lauren Mac Lean tried to publish an article in CCHS' student newspaper, the Greenwave Flash. The article was about choir teacher Kathy Archey and some tapes that were not sent in to the state honor choir. The union tried to prevent the article from being printed, but CCHS principal, Kevin Lords, and CCSD superintendent, Carolyn Ross, gave the go-aheaed, citing freedom of speech.
LATER, we find out a few things, that were not mentioned by any of the above parties at the time:
-- the article could be considered slanderous, since it damaged Mrs. Archey's reputation, which resulted in Mrs. Archey contacting a lawyer
-- many students tapes WERE sent in, just not ALL of them, a practice which local choir teachers are allowed to do, and have been doing for years
-- Honor Choir isn't in Mrs. Archey's purview, meaning she is not required to teach it
-- CCEA (the union) possibly blew things out of proportion, creating a mountain out of a molehill. Many people believe that if CCEA had left it alone and let the article be printed without a fuss, that it would not have made national news.
-- Freedom of speech sometimes has a cost (i.e. you can tell your teachers to "F*** off," but that doesn't mean you won't get in trouble for doing so, even if you claim your first amendment rights)
